Tortuguero National Park is located in the Province of Limón on the Costa Rican Caribbean. The park protects the most important green turtle nesting beach in the Western Hemisphere. It is covered by a lush tropical rainforest. Within the park there are a series of artificial canals that connect the port of Moín in the southeast with Barra del Colorado, on the border with Nicaragua. Access is only by river by plane or by sea.
Turtle watching here in Costa Rica is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences. Witnessing sea turtles come ashore to the nest is unbelievable.
Five out of the seven known sea turtles’ nest on Costa Rican beaches. On some nights, the beaches literally team with the huge female turtles all vying for a spot to excavate a nest. Thousands upon thousands of eggs will be deposited, but only 1 – 5,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood. Those lucky few will grow from a four-inch baby into the largest reptiles on the planet and may live to be a hundred years old
Light clothes, swimming suit, sunscreen, hat, camera (ideally waterproof), water bottle, comfortable walking shoes, insect repellent, binoculars, raincoat. For the night-tour please wear dark clothes.
